How to use Strataderm

After applying Strataderm to my scar, the gel does not dry within the recommended time. What is the reason for this?

When applied correctly, Strataderm should be dry in 3–4 minutes. If it takes longer to dry you have probably applied too much. Gently remove the excess with a tissue and allow the drying process to continue.

Is it possible to apply other treatments over Strataderm once it dries?

Yes, after Strataderm has dried any other topical ointments (cosmetics, sunscreen) can be applied.

Should I use a moisturizer after applying Strataderm?

No. It is not necessary, as Strataderm forms a barrier for your scar that maintains the skins moisture.

Can Strataderm be used on old scars as well? Is Strataderm still effective on such scars?

Strataderm can be used on new and old scars. The best results will be achieved when the healing process of the skin is still active. This can be for many years, without treatment, and is typical in scars that continue to be red or raised.

What is the best method to apply Strataderm? Should the rubbing be more gentle or more vigorous? Does it make any difference?

Strataderm should be applied gently in a very thin coat over the affected area. The area should be clean and dry. Strataderm will stay on top of the skin, therefore no rubbing is required as this will not increase the effectiveness.

Are there any precautions?

  • Strataderm should not be applied on third degree burns or to open wounds.
  • Strataderm should not be placed in contact with mucous membranes, or the eyes.
  • Strataderm should not be applied over other skin treatments without the advice of your physician.
  • Strataderm may stain clothing if not completely dry.
  • Strataderm is for external use only. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult your physician.
  • Keep Strataderm out of the reach of children.
  • Store below 77 °F (25 °C).
  • Do not use Strataderm after the expiration (EXP) date printed on the tube.

Are there any side-effects?

Strataderm is suitable for children or people with sensitive skin. However, if redness, pain or skin irritation should occur, discontinue treatment and consult your physician.

Can Strataderm be used on children?

Yes. Strataderm is suitable for children or people with sensitive skin.

Results

I have used Strataderm as recommended, but I have not seen any results yet. What have I done wrong?

An initial treatment period of 60–90 days is recommended for everyone and most people experience noticeable results within 30 days. However, treatment time and results vary from person to person depending on the severity of the individual scar. For best results Strataderm should be maintained in continuous contact with the skin (24 hours a day/7 days a week). If you can't see any difference after 90 days of continuous treatment, we recommend consulting your physician for further treatment options.

Strataderm is not working for my scars. I feel as though I should get a refund.

The timing of results varies greatly from person to person. Also each individual scar reacts different. In various studies, the treatment of scars with silicone gel has shown great results with improvement rates of up to 85%. Of course some scars may be difficult to treat and an additional treatment should probably be used in combination with Strataderm. Please consult a physician to discuss these options.

How should I take care of my scar?

Scars, in particular new scars, should not be exposed to UV-light and extreme temperatures (intense sunshine, sunbeds, saunas and extreme cold). Scars can be particularly sensitive to chemical ingredients such as those contained in detergents, perfumes, herbal or botanical extracts. Tight clothing should also be avoided, to prevent irritation and further injuring to the scar tissue. Exercises or activities that cause tension on your scar should be avoided so your scar may heal without further disruption.

How long will it take for my scar to improve?

Strataderm is recommended as minimum treatment of 60–90 days (24 hours a day/7 days a week). Larger and older scars may take longer. Continued use is recommended until no further improvement is seen.

Types of Scars

For which types of scars is Strataderm indicated?

Strataderm is used for the management of keloids and hypertrophic scars and is effective on both old and new scars. Strataderm can also be used in conjunction with other invasive scar management options to improve overall results, including surgical excision and resuturing, intralesional injections and pressure garments.

Can Strataderm be used for burn scars?

Yes. Severe burns commonly cause hypertrophic scars, for which Strataderm is very well indicated. Strataderm should not be used on broken skin/open wounds.

General

What is the difference between the silicone in Strataderm and household silicone?

There are many different silicones that exist which are used in various products and different ways from industrial, construction and heavy industry to cosmetics and personal care products. The specific polymers of silicone used in Strataderm are of high quality and have been tested and approved for the use in scar management.

Is Strataderm the same as Dermatix or Kelo-cote?

No. Although there are many scar therapy products that use silicons and some with self-drying formulations, Strataderm has been developed using new silicone technology, that does not use Si02 (sand or glass) to aid in drying. Superior durability, skin feel and drying time are some of the advantages of Strataderm's advanced formulation.

Can you provide me with further information about Strataderm, for example a patient leaflet or similar?

Please refer to the downloads section on our website, where we provide our latest information materials.

Does Strataderm have an expiry date? I can not find this information on my tube.

Strataderm has an expiry date of five years after manufacturing. This date is imprinted on every box (side flap) and tube (end seal) in the format year-month (e.g. EXP 2018-09 or 18-09).

I am interested in distributing Strataderm in my country. Whom may I contact to discuss a business relationship?

Please contact our sales department.

Is there any sun protection in Strataderm?

No. However, sunscreen may be applied over Strataderm once it has completely dried.

What is the difference between silicone gel and silicone patches or sheets? Which formulation works better?

Most forms of pure silicones have shown to be effective in scar management. The best results from silicone therapies are achieved when the silicone product can be maintained with continuous contact to the skin without secondary side effects such as maceration, rashes, pruritus and infection. Strataderm is a rapidly drying, non-sticky, transparent silicone gel formulation that is easy to use and forms a flexible, breathable sheet. Strataderm is also ideal for the use on irregular skin surfaces, joints and the face. Results from clinical trials suggest that silicone gel is equivalent in efficacy to traditional silicone gel sheeting but easier to use. (Mustoe, 2008)
